University Hospital Cologne publishes first clinical data from a pilot study on the intraoperative use of cold argon jet plasma in vascular surgery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"306\" data-end=\"717\">A recent pilot study conducted by <strong data-start=\"381\" data-end=\"412\">University Hospital Cologne<\/strong> shows for the first time that the use of <strong data-start=\"454\" data-end=\"487\">cold atmospheric plasma (CAP)<\/strong> during vascular surgical procedures in high-risk patients has the potential to significantly reduce wound-healing disorders requiring revision surgery. The results have now been published in the <em>Journal of Clinical Medicine<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"719\" data-end=\"1129\">The pilot study investigated whether a <strong data-start=\"758\" data-end=\"810\">brief, contact-free treatment of the wound edges<\/strong> (after subcutaneous suturing and before skin closure) with the <strong data-start=\"874\" data-end=\"911\">argon cold plasma jet<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"874\" data-end=\"911\">kINPen<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> MED <\/strong>\u00a0can reduce the risk of postoperative complications in high-risk patients with<strong> peripheral arterial disease (PAD)<\/strong>, a chronic circulatory disorder in which the healing of surgical wounds is often impaired.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1190\"><strong data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1190\">Significantly fewer complications after CAP application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1487\">A total of 50 high-risk patients took part in the study. Twenty-five of them received, in addition to standard care, a single CAP treatment of the wound edges immediately before skin closure, while 25 patients in the control group were treated according to the standard procedure without plasma.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1518\" data-end=\"1675\">In only <strong data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1532\">8%<\/strong> of patients in the CAP group, surgical revision was required due to severe wound-healing disorders\u2014compared with <strong data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1653\">32%<\/strong> in the control group.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1677\" data-end=\"1871\">These results suggest that the intraoperative use of CAP can significantly reduce the postoperative risk of inguinal wound-healing disorders without substantially changing the surgical workflow.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1873\" data-end=\"1930\"><strong data-start=\"1873\" data-end=\"1930\">Background: An unresolved problem in vascular surgery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1932\" data-end=\"2164\">Wound-healing disorders, especially in the groin area, are among the most common and burdensome complications after vascular surgical procedures. They lead to longer hospital stays, higher mortality, and substantial follow-up costs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2711\">Clinical studies show that in patients with postoperative wound infections, <strong data-start=\"2242\" data-end=\"2282\">mortality is more than twice as high<\/strong> (<strong data-start=\"2284\" data-end=\"2311\">9.3% compared with 4.5%<\/strong>). The average <strong data-start=\"2326\" data-end=\"2353\">length of hospital stay<\/strong> increases from <strong data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2386\">12 to 28 days<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"2388\" data-end=\"2407\">Treatment costs<\/strong> also rise significantly\u2014to an average of <strong data-start=\"2449\" data-end=\"2463\">EUR 19,000<\/strong> compared with <strong data-start=\"2478\" data-end=\"2491\">EUR 9,000<\/strong> in uncomplicated cases<sup>2<\/sup>. Despite modern surgical techniques, the rate of severe wound-healing problems in high-risk patients has remained almost unchanged for decades\u2014sometimes with incidences of up to 30%<sup>3,4,5,6,7<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2713\" data-end=\"3042\">The researchers led by <strong data-start=\"2736\" data-end=\"2761\">Dr. med.
